On Friday 18th May 10 Upper Moutere school students took their skills to the Motueka Rugby field for the year 7 and 8 tackle 7s rugby tournament. The team known as Rangers were entered in the competitive grade with 3 other schools, Golden Bay High school, Parklands school and Tapawera Area School.
The Upper Moutere Rangers team were keen to keep the title after winning it last year.
The morning started off with a quick briefing to ensure that all teams knew the tournament rules.
The first round was an intense match between Rangers and Golden Bay. Even though size was a factor, but they didn’t match Rangers experienced tacklers. Rangers showed no lack of determination and ran in three tries, but soon after Golden Bay fought back.
Rangers took out the match winning 3-1.
Round two of the day included the victorious Rangers team and Tapawera. Rangers ran in five quick tries winning the game 5-0.
Our final game of the round robin was against the almighty Parklands and this was no walk in the park.
Rangers played with great heart and perseverance, we took out the match winning 3-1.
The day was not over, the unbeaten Rangers team now faced the battle of their day, the final against the mighty Parklands team. Parklands were the stronger team on the day beating us 2 -1.Upper Moutere Rangers were exhausted but proud as they had given their best throughout the whole tournament. Awards were presented at the end of the tournament. The following awards were handed out: Josh Grant, Player of The Day , Jacob Bryan, best tackler, and Harrison Buckland won the fair player award.
